How to Recover a Bitcoin Wallet: Type and What You Still Have

Most attempts to recover a Bitcoin wallet reduce to two questions: which Bitcoin wallet you used, and which access materials still exist. Self-custody (Bitcoin Core, Electrum, a hardware wallet, or a mobile Bitcoin wallet) is restored with a seed phrase, a wallet backup, descriptors, or a file such as wallet.dat — not by asking vendor support to “unlock” keys they never held. An exchange account is a different path: email, KYC, and 2FA reset, not key recovery. Artifact assessment starts through wallet recovery; never send a full seed phrase or private keys in chat, and do not expect a guaranteed outcome.
An exchange account is not a Bitcoin wallet
If your BTC sat on Binance, Bybit, Coinbase, or another platform, you held a custodial balance, not a key file. Recovery means account access: email, KYC, replacing 2FA, and the exchange support queue. The platform will not import your seed phrase or restore Bitcoin Core for you. Mixing these scenarios is dangerous: scammers ask for a seed to “unlock an exchange,” or for wallet.dat to “recover exchange BTC.”
Self-custody means the keys were yours: an app or device created a seed, descriptors, or an encrypted wallet file. Without those materials, nobody — including DefCrypt — can pull coins from the chain from an address alone. Identify the wallet type and remaining artifacts

First name the product: Bitcoin Core, Electrum, Sparrow, a hardware wallet, a mobile app, or “only an address from a block explorer.” Then list what still exists physically: a paper Electrum seed or BIP39 phrase (these are different formats — do not paste one into a client that expects the other), wallet.dat or another backup, descriptors, a file password, an old device, or a partial phrase with known word positions. Without that inventory, no honest chance assessment is possible.
A partial seed is a separate scenario with hard limits; see when recovery from a partial seed is realistic. First steps: a recovery-route checklist
- Record the wallet type, Bitcoin network, and funded address — without putting a full seed in cloud notes.
- Locate the offline phrase: for Electrum, an Electrum seed (or BIP39 only if the wallet was BIP39 from the start); for hardware wallets, many mobile wallets, and Sparrow, usually BIP39 (12/24 words). Import only in the matching client class with the correct seed type; set a new PIN or password.
- For Bitcoin Core, search for a wallet backup / wallet.dat and the encryption passphrase; restore with the client’s own tools (for example, restorewallet), not third-party “unlockers.”
- If a descriptor (or a descriptor-wallet backup) survived, use descriptor import in a current Bitcoin Core — that is not the same as guessing a password.
- If the wallet file is intact but the password is forgotten, gather password hints; do not buy a “guaranteed crack.”
- Never enter a seed or keys on “verification” sites, in bots, or in “remote diagnostic” forms.

Any channel that asks you to send a full seed “for assessment” breaks the security model: whoever receives the phrase can spend the BTC.
If artifacts exist but you are unsure of the order of steps, describe the data set (wallet type; whether a file, seed, or password exists — not the phrase itself) for an assessment through wallet recovery. The no-guarantee model is explained on the about page.
When recovery is already unrealistic
No seed, no wallet file, no descriptor, no device holding a vault, and no sufficient partial phrase with known positions — blind recovery “from an address” is practically unrealistic. Knowing only a public Bitcoin address or a balance screenshot does not yield keys.
A full seed that already appeared in phishing or a bot does not make the old address safe even after a “successful” import: treat the key as compromised and plan a move to a new wallet created offline. Any assessment outcome depends on the data, not on a slogan that claims every Bitcoin wallet can be opened.
Do not confuse this task with recovering stolen funds after an outgoing transfer: that is emergency response and chain work, not importing wallet.dat.
Risks and limitations
- Without a seed, wallet.dat / backup, descriptor, or a device holding keys, blind recovery from an address alone is practically unrealistic.
- Anyone who obtains a full seed phrase or private keys can spend the BTC — treat disclosure as irreversible.
- Phishing “recovery services” and bots harvest seed phrases under the guise of diagnostics.
- A custodial exchange account is not restored with a Bitcoin wallet seed, and the reverse does not work either.
- Outcome is not guaranteed: even with artifacts, results depend on file integrity, password strength, and wallet model.
